Strange fossil found in rock piles near a pond in Port Byron, Illinois.

This strange fossil was found in rock piles near a pond in Port Byron, Illinois. I believe the snail was found there too, possibly in my backyard in Port Byron not the pond though.

Possible Illinois trilobite or crinoid fossil

Any suggestions as to the type os fossil this is? Please post your ideas with the response button below.

The one fossil is obviously a snail the other one is trickier. It does have the general look of a trilobite, but it could also be the feathery end of a crinoid. Crinoids are often called “sea lilies” due to their plant like appearance, but they are a type of echinoderm related to starfish. There are a great many crinoid fossils in Illinois so I am going to lean toward that as an ID. You can Google “Crinoid fossil” if you would like to see other examples of them so you can see the whole animal rather than just a piece of it.

The fossil on the right looks like it might be a tail (pygidium) of a trilobite. I suggest you compare your specimen with pictures of the pygidia from Dalmanites. Good luck.

  4. When I originally commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Thanks!
