Mussel fossil found along the Ouchita River held in palm of my hand.

Found along the Ouchita River.

Another view of the fossil mussel.

We found it laying on the ground in a rock pile.

    Hi,
You have found a fossil Gryphae sp. also known as a devils toenail. There are many different species of Gryphaea, all from the cretaceous or Jurassic period. They can be collected all over the world as I found similar ones in France, the UK and Germany.
Best regards, Ton Hendriks, a Dutch fossil collector
